Riceboy Sleeps

Official poster for Riceboy Sleeps directed by Anthony Shim

From the first conversations between Anthony and I it was clear that we wanted to encapsulate a feeling of nostalgia and childish-ness with this poster. The goal was to embrace imperfection in the image, similarly to how a child would paint. Inspired by Korean watercolour paintings, I went with using watercolour to create the textural background and paint “splotches”. After creating the title design digitally, it was printed, then scanned back in to create small imperfections.

Seagrass

Official poster for Seagrass directed by Meredith Hama-Brown

Meredith’s beautiful and surreal film  portrayed an overwhelming sense of absence between a family. The themes of vacancy and space in familial relationships triggered an image of a figure cutout from their surroundings, leaving a literal gaping hole in the picture. I also wanted to add an inkbleed texture to the title treatment, to convey a feeling of being close to water, since the film is set on the coasts of Vancouver Island.

Scaring Women at Night FINAL with TIFF_SMALL 0.25x_0.25x.jpg

Scaring Women at Night

Official poster for Scaring Women at Night directed by Karimah Zakia Issa

Scaring Women at Night illustrates an experience that every women has been through, walking home at night afraid that someone is following you. I wanted to create a woman’s POV with this poster, of what it feels like to turn around and notice a presence behind you - seeing an obscured, mysterious, faceless presence in the dark alone at night.

Little

Official poster for Little directed by Lily Gao

When Lily and I first discussed poster concepts for her short film Little, we talked about portraying scattered and fragmented memories, the idea of details getting lost over time. Visually I was inspired to recreate the look of decayed film from old photographs - like memories that fade over time, I pulled sequential stills from a moment in the film where a young girl runs over to her father, and printed each still on acetate, decayed it slightly with alcohol, before pasting it back together and digitally scanning it back in, resulting in the final image seen here. The titles and text elements were also hand drawn to maintain a journal-like and organic approach to the design.

The Young Arsonists

Official poster for The Young Arsonists directed by Sheila Pye

The composition for the majority of The Young Arsonists reminded me of portraiture style paintings, and I wanted to carry that visual style into the poster. The design leans into a mix medium approach, using digital treatment for most of the image with the addition of hand painted acrylic paint strokes representing fire.
